Cruising Up the River

Monday morning at 5 a.m., we left Cádiz and the Atlantic Ocean to start heading up the Guadalquiver River to Seville.  Because the Aegean Odyssey is a smaller boat, it is one of the few cruise ships that is able to do this.  What was clear from the outset of going up this river was that surrounding land is all delta.  In fact, at some point in history, there was so much silt in the river Cádiz became the main port rather than Seville.  As promised it was a slow and quiet journey with one lock to go through.

Phil and Lek were on their balcony enjoying the scenery too

We arrived in Seville around 4 pm.  We had enjoyed a lovely champagne lunch at the Terrace Grill as it was Pat's birthday and her husband's was on the 29th) which explained the two bottles of champagne and the two birthday cakes.  It was a lovely way to spend the afternoon chatting and laughing with these people.

Of course, as we disembark on the 31st, there was also the issue of stuffing all my stuff back into my suitcase but that was accomplished without too much drama.  For dinner, we were joined by one of the speakers on the ship, The Very Reverend Victor Stock who is quite a renowned priest.  He is very amusing with lots of interesting stories.  His friend, David Davies, a very accomplished organist, joined us.  We actually went to the bar after dinner and I am sure it was close to 1 am by the time I went back to my cabin.

Tomorrow (Halloween) starts the next part of this trip - two nights in Seville with a city tour in the morning and a day trip to Córdoba the following day.
